Entries for the 2010 Cheshire Cat open 1st November 2009 This years Cheshire Cat proved the most popular edition yet. With a record 1,650 entries, and 1,300 riders braving the prospect of another cold day, the weather did us all a big favour in the end. Out of the blue, we were blessed with bright sunshine all day. It seems just about everybody had a great day and we are already being asked about next years ride. - On that note look out for news soon. Detailed rider time information in spreadsheet format is here: Rider times and rider photos are available from SportivePhoto The 2009 UCI Cheshire Cat truly marks the start of British summertime for cyclosportive riders - it's the first big ride of the year and it also takes place on the first day of British summertime. We've got distance options for everybody. If it's your first time you might want to try our 37 miler. It's quite flat and takes riders along the lovely Cheshire lanes. For 2009 we’ve toughened up (but not too much for March!) on the longer 66 and 102 mile options... We bring you pretty Cheshire plains and lanes and a fantastic cobbled climb new to the route, in the true style of a continental spring classic. First big climb is the iconic Mow Cop with its famous 'Killer Mile'. Anyone who can cycle up the incredible 1:4 gradient in March without stopping deserves a medal in our view - so we present riders with one on their return! But it's not all about tough hills - see some of the beautiful countryside Cheshire has and observe the contrast between Peak and Moorland in the east and lush Cheshire plain in the west. For 2009, again this event raises cash for St John Ambulance. Major climbs On the 102 and 66 miles options Mow Cop literally stops some riders in their tracks. Partly for this reason it's a popular place for spectators with the aptly named Cheshire View pub alongside the steepest 1 in 4 part of the climb. After Mow Cop and the inevitable descent, riders enter the Staffordshire Moorlands, Wincle, Macclesfield Forest, Nab End and cobbled Swiss Hill - the last major climb in the 2009 Cheshire Cat. Not especially steep but riders might find themselves walking if using ordinary climbing techniques. So what's the trick the continental pros use for staying on yer bike then? 'Snatchy' sandstone cobbles give less grip so stay sat-down and keep hands wide on the bars. Look ahead and ride where the car tyres will have been.
